You may think that hardcore music is only for cool-looking cocksure punk guys from broken homes, and you would probably be right. But what about the zines of these elusive nocturnal angry young men? Well there are a lot of punk fanzines around at the moment, but one of the best is Word Attack (if it doesn't have some connotation of violence
in the title, it's just not hc).
In this issue, 'Bloodclot Faggots', a hilarious account of Adelaide where the victims include Adelaide citizens generally, a bass amp and nearly a Ford Lasar and its inhabitants; and for the first time ever Word Attack includes a sports editorial including some raging predictions on the future of 20/20 cricket and 2010's AFL grand final winners.
Plus there's heaps of reviews of hc stuff and lifestyle suggestions (‘put your t-shirt over your hoody if it feels good'). Next ish they promise Fil's vegan cookbook, reviews of EVERY record on Tom's ‘How's Your Edge' List, and Nightclub Pics. Man these guys are totally kick arse. Stop banging your head against the wall and bang yourself one of these suckers.

What:
Star: The Life & Wild Times of Warren Beatty
Who:
Peter Biskind
Where:
Any decent bookstore
How much:
$50
Whether depicting Robert Altman's fondness for whorehouse blowjobs in Easy Riders, Raging Bulls or character assassinating Harvey Weinstein in Down and Dirty Pictures, Peter Biskind has a tendency for getting sued. Now he's readied his lawyers for the release of Star: The Life & Wild Times of Warren Beatty.
The Stella Adler-trained Warren Beatty acted Off Broadway before following big sis (one Shirley Maclaine) into movie-stardom. Thus followed a veritable fuckfest. Nobody was safe. Not Natalie Wood, Julie Christie, nor Dianne Keaton. Not Cher aged sweet-sixteen! I could go on.
He'd coo his now famous "What's new pussycat?" into the receiver to starlets all over greater LA. Along the way Beatty became a prime protagonist in the 'New Hollywood' with his seminal Bonnie and Clyde. He began directing his own films such as Dick Tracy (yep banged Madonna too) and eventually ‘settled down' with his Bugsy co-star Annette Benning.
Now Warren's suing Peter Biskind. What for? Claiming the actor has slept with 13,000 women. Own it Mr Beatty!

Bug & Megs are feltophiles. While the other kids were playing ponies, this crafty couple were tinkering with trinkets and fooling with finger puppets. But they soon grew tired of inferior acrylic "felt". They looked everywhere for an Australian supplier of real felt, but alas, none could be found. Despondent, they made some scones and contemplated their malaise. "But wait!", Megs probably said to Bugs. "We're grown ups now! Let's set up our own felt shop!" So they did - it felt so right.
Currently B&M felt is available online. As well as making gorgeous felt products, B&M supply high quality wool felt sourced from responsible producers (there's not a scrap of waste - just lots of scraps of felt). Their blog follows the ingenious use of felt - from this swish hat to this incredible topological rug of NYC. Jeepers, felt really can be used for anything! Even roof insulation...

When:
Official opening Mon Mar 1. Sun-Thurs 11am-10pm, Fri-Sat, 11am-11pm.

Conventional wisdom holds that Mexicans come from the South, so how do you explain it when one that you've only seen up North in Sydney arrives in Melbourne? Well the thing is you can't explain it - but you can be grateful for it.
Mad Mex takes all the good things about Mexico: flavour, cheapness, Corona, and funny accents, while eschewing the bad things like disorganisation, drug lords and dirtiness. The result being a barrage of tacos, burritos and other Mexican fare that is pretty hard to beat if you're shooting lower than a Michelin Hat restaurant.
If the Mad Mex that has been seriously doing the business on Crown Street in Surry Hills is anything to go by, Chapel Street has a new playa in town and he is loco. Taco Bill down the road is sweating and it's not because of a hot chilli.

Local doyen of all things obscure Pat O'Brien is the brains (and body) behind Sunshine & Grease - always ready with a tidbit of information about your favourite artist, the skinny on the best shows and the inside word on releases you didn't know you needed.
Originally housed in the CBD's Bus Gallery, this treasure chest of new and second-hand records, books and films has found an all together more fitting home in Clifton Hill. The vast array of records is expanding to include one of the largest cassette ranges you're likely to see, including the new A. Wallace & Tom Hall split.
Pat has opened a gallery in the front space, in conjunction with Lachlan Conn, former wunderkind behind the much-missed Forepaw Gallery (and designer of the shop's awesome signage). Check out the debut show, Works Backyard, on until this Saturday and featuring the backyard works by Eamon Sprod, Kim Maxwell, Chris LG Hill, Dylan Martorell and more.
There are events galore coming up in March, and releases on the shop's imprint label, so keep an eye on their blog. Pat will be there behind the counter each week. Visit him to expand you mind (and cultural ephemera collection).

Galleries are great venues for shows. They are open, clean spaces and the shows held in them more often then not feature line-ups you're not going to see in any pub around these parts. So it is with the new as-yet-unnamed gallery space in West Melbourne, run by the boys previously behind the wonderful Gulag Projects. Ahead of their opening (and while the fight over the name) they're holding a series of shows for artists that don't use PAs. The first of these is tonight and is the launch of the latest Sabbatical release, Dead Boomers' sinister seachange narrative, Family Money. Rounding out the PA-less night are Snuff Budgies, Ian Wadley and mystery act Yev Kasem (that's the name of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi, for those that don't know). - Us
